Gone Mental on Guv Campaign

Posted February 29th, 2008 at 11:05 AM by Jeff A. Taylor

I’m gonna side with Pat McCrory on Bob Orr’s charge that McCrory should’ve attended a mental campaign event held by the N.C. Mental Health Coalition.

For one, such “forums” put on by decidedly interested parties can quickly slide into propaganda sessions of dubious value. Two, candidates have a finite amount of time and McCrory manifestly thought it better to be at a city council meeting than chew over the topic of mental health, which has only come up about 15 times before and will about 15 more before the campaign ends. Three, the “mental health issue” is really a sub-issue of the larger problem of lack accountability in state government. Thus one could reasonably conclude that hashing over end-results is pointless so long the current, corrupt infrastructure and personnel remain in place.

Bonus Observation: Were I crazy enough to run for office and receive info about a forum put on by the N.C. Mental Health Coalition, I would immediately check their Web site for background info. Upon seeing that it had not been updated for over two years, I would politely decline to participate.
