Comment and analysis on all things Charlotte

Southwest Airlines summer schedule is out

And if you were hoping that they’d increase their flying out of Charlotte in it, you’d be disappointed. It lists the same six flights: 2 x Baltimore (BWI), 2 x Chicago Midway (MDW), 1 x Houston (HOU), 1 x Orlando (MCO). And that’s a flight a day less than Southwest’s two South Carolina destinations (Charleston, Greenville/Spartanburg). Looks like Southwest isn’tcurrently making any effort to build up the stations its adding via the AirTran merger after they convert over.

Bonus observation: The Southwest/AirTran merger is easily the worst recent airline combination. And a lot of that is because of Southwest’s IT inadequacies. The hope is still to have a codeshare in place between the two airlines sometime in 1Q2013. Which would be nice, because otherwise some of the current flights will generate approximately no traffic without one. Like, for example, Raleigh/Durham – Orlando (RDU) on AirTran. Yes, that’s right AirTran. Southwest dominates the RDU-MCO market and AirTran has never flown the route. That changes in the spring when two of Southwest’s four RDU-MCO flights shift to AirTran. It’s nopt obvious why the average consumer would think to look on AirTran for those flights…
