Remembering what MJ said

The Associated Press has a story out marking the Charlotte Bobcats finishing the season with the lowest winning percentage in NBA history. The money quote, from Michael Jordan before the season began:

I think this is not a wasted season because who knows how good we can be? We’ve got some good pieces that can help us get to the playoffs. I’m not waiting until next year. I think we have a good quality basketball team this year.

Nope. And perhaps the reality is that his Airness just isn’t a very good basketball executive.

There just haven’t been many elite players who transitioned to front office success, or even coaching success. From the “NBA’s 50 Greatest Players”, Jerry West is the only elite GM and Lenny Wilkens the only elite coach.

All the successful coaches and GMs who played pro ball were role players: Pat Riley, Don Nelson, Jack Ramsay, Phil Jackson, Danny Ferry, Billy King, Rick Carlisle, George Karl, etc.

There was no reason to expect MJ to be a quality executive just because of his on-court success.
