Says here that Charlotte is being considered for the ACC basketball tournament from 2016 on. Don’t get your hopes up too much.
Why? It all comes down to the numbers. The Greensboro Coliseum, which will host the tournament the next three years, seats nearly 4,000 more than Time Warner Arena here in Charlotte. That would be a problem. And making matters worse is that the number teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference is growing from the current 12 to at least 14 and maybe more by the time the tourney could get here. Those teams joining the league are in the Northeast, which contains large media markets that are driving ACC expansion. So having the ACC tournament in Washington — or even New York City — is likely to happen more often than it currently does.
Where’s that leave Charlotte? Could see the ACC tourney here maybe once a decade as a change up from Greensboro at most. Expecting more than that is simply unrealistic.

Has the Big East tournament ever been played anywhere other than MSG?. The ACC will not play in that building.

I could see CLT replacing Greensboro in the rotation. Bigger media market and has an airport allowing for direct flights from far flung ACC cities. Now that the conf is 14, Greensboro’s days are probably numbered.

ACC tourney should be left in Greensboro. The facility is much better than Time Warner with ample parking. Also, the older members of the ACC such as NC, NCS, and Duke should have preferential treatment. Charlotte should try to get a big preseason and/or a Christmas tournament. How about an ACC/Atlantic 10 challenge? Match up Charlotte vs. NC, Duke, or NC State. How about Mass. vs Boston College? Are the Bobcats still losing money or has Michael received a grant to protect endangered species?

Keep your WWF-like rigged tournament out of MSG. The Big East refs stink too, but even they would have called a charge on Marshall.
