McColl: Nuke My Transit Center, Get UNCC Students Drunk Uptown

I swear, this town wouldn’t know news if it…

Anyway, check what Hugh McColl is preaching to the Charlotte Business Journal. First on UNCC:

We need to keep pressure on them to build that (light rail) line out there, and that will bring the college kids downtown. It’s a really good thing, and it will spur investment. … We can’t undo 50 years of building suburbs. But we can quit building them and force along the light rail high-rise. And we have: We’ve forced moderate rise, and it’s happening. What you do is you drive up the price of land, and it drives up the density.

And:

Still, McColl has a few suggestions for the city. He encouraged local leaders to expand the light rail line to UNC Charlotte and develop a better link between the campus and center city. “That might be the most important thing we can do.”

There you have it, not a damn word about traffic congestion or air quality. One billion dollars to make sure EpiCenter is full of Bud Light drinkers. “Force” high-density development with trains. And to “spur investment” — CMPD will need to buy even more TASERS to police the thugs on the expanded rail line, I guess.

OK, snark off. McColl’s about face on his transit center is pretty stunning:

He also suggested the city build a new, larger transit center off North Tryon Street, near the rail yards, and convert the existing center off Fourth Street into an open-air farmers market.

The existing transit center was created by Hugh McColl. Bus passengers cueing up in front of the new Taj McColl didn’t send the right message. In short order BAC was partnering with the city to build the transit center several blocks away. The city found the land, the bank had the $9m. in cash. Now McColl wants to kick the big bus stop several miles up Tryon Street.

Interestingly McColl echoes a certain nay-saying blog when he talks about the DNC confab and its impact on Uptown and — ta-da — the transit center:

I’ve been talking to the mayor about it. Literally, we’re going to have to shut the center city down to cars except official cars like the Olympics do. It’s not something that people don’t do. I’ve been to Barcelona and seen it, been to Atlanta and seen it, been to Sydney and seen it, so you can. But it’s going to be a strain.

No doubt about it. The transit center will have to be shuttered for the duration of the convention. I’ve been saying that for months. And if you are going to have to spend money to set up a temporary one, why not make that a down payment on a new one? A new one that is out of Uptown and does not cause image problems when it is the locus of riots and such.

Hugh has spoken. We all know what that means.

Ahhh… yes… The statists are speaking now with some force.

Cage the animals up outside of the precious downtown and make it harder to congregate. Of course, it’s for the benefit of the commuters w/r to the DNC that we can do this not the racial conclusion about the problem.

Then we can better disperse the issue to UNCC by allowing the criminals access to the suburbs to prey on the people that have fled the crime and thugs by train.

Evidently U-City is already a destination of choice for property criminals. Students are easy pickings and tend to not even know how to report a crime.

Hugh even has a term for all this — “social peace.” Can’t have “social peace” without jobs, he says. So what if some jobs are petty theft?

If we want Hugh’s ‘Social Peace’ lets just close down the jail, the police, and the criminal courts. We could save millions in taxes to give the new prisons at CMS.

Simple solution: Put the transit center at Johnson Smith University. That way it could be both a student center, transit center, cultural enrichment center, and economic incentive for minority contractors. Win, win, win.

Throw in a trolley to JC Smith and I’m sold!

But there are no white people to mug at JC Smith. Not sure that passes the “social peace” test as a result.

Haven’t you heard, “Social Peace” is an euro-centric term to justify social control and compliance to a system that is archaic to our new multi-cultural milieu. Yo.. bro.. chill.

Not to mention that the term ‘Social Peace’ was coined by the Patriarchy to keep Women in their place. Who is the biggest the biggest Patriarch Uptown if not Hugh McColl?

Nah, nah — you are thinking of ‘Social Piece.’

    Carry-on.

I don’t think Hugh swings the big Richard around like he used to.
His brother in law was laughed out of congress by the voters in Rock Hill/Camden/Dilon etc. Sure he can comandeer one of the BAC jets, to go wear ever, as part of his retirement package. Of course he is green and is worried about global warming, “but have that Gulfstream warmed up and running when we arive at the hanger.” But unless one is making money of off Hugh, no one really cares what he has to say.

    The 90s are over.

    I disagree, Rick.

Lewis and Thompson failed; Rogers too if you listen to the old-line Duke engineers talk. Yeah the “green” stuff confuses dopey reporters but everyone who matters knows it all comes back to the gr$$n. Duke is in the middle of defensive merger that will see most top slots go to Progress.

Moynihan is a cypher. A lawyer who gives good opening statement, but otherwise has been unable to deliver.

Nah, folks are looking to Hugh by default for their cues. Were he to say that we’ve overreached and need to re-prioritize, think what that would mean.

The Uptown crowd is basically Glee on steroids and botox. Not an original thought to be had, but relentless in executing what they believe to be The Best Idea Ever!

That best idea remains the 277 loop re-purposed as Manhattan South. If Hugh doesn’t inject reality, no one else will.

    My fantasy..
To be rich enough to open a store uptown and give away malt liquor with a free fried croaker plate for good measure.

Now that would rub their elitist noses in it real good.

McColl’s remarks do bring one thing into relief: In Charlotte, the real divide isn’t between red and blue; it’s between those who talk about these schemes in terms of “we” and those who talk about them in terms of “they.”

Easy Rick. You’re trying to paddle up the creek with an uncircumsized paddle with that remark.
